The most recognizable face on local TV isn't Dealin' Doug or Ernie Bjorkman. It's Shagman, the pitchman for Rocky's Autos. Yes, the commercials are sometimes lame, but guess what? They sell cars like crazy, 500 a month by one estimate. And Shagman and his sidekicks, Officer Odell and Audra, are celebrities in their own right. Eagle-eyed viewers will note that Shagman wasn't himself there for awhile. The original Shag, as he is known in show-biz lore, was actor Ron Vigil until a contract dispute broke up the team two years ago and Rocky's brought in a faux Shagman. Nobody's saying what the problem was, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't artistic differences. Anyway, Vigil; Odell Stroud, the cop, and Audra Winn, the blond, were reunited (although Winn never left the ads) in November, and everything's hunky-dory again. But here's a question that's always bugged me: What's a "shagman''? David Rothrock - who founded Rocky's at a corner gas station near Mile High Stadium in 1982 and has built it into one of the region's largest used-car dealerships, including a $100,000 budget for TV and radio spots - has the answer. "It's a name used for people who drive cars back and forth, from coast to coast or locally."

He was tired of the assumptions that he sold used cards for a living. He was a classically trained actor who graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1989, and yet he was known as the guy with a goofy mug who runs around a car lot with an arrow in his butt. He was just a working actor playing Shaggy, or the Shag Man, as Vigil calls him. It was, of course, a nice, steady gig, something he wanted after going back to school to the University of Arizona on a full-ride scholarship to study TV commercials. He got the job in 1995 (Rocky’s wanted a tall, lanky guy but fell in love with his character), and it was a full-time, paying gig, with appearances and autograph sessions.

May 20, 2015 ... Shagman, Audra, & Officer O'Dell (Rocky's Auto) ... Frank Azar is to Denver as Saul Goodman is to Albuquerque (commercial wise, that is). 6. Posted in Colorado May 20, 2015 by Annie You’re Sure To Instantly Recognize These 8 Colorado ‘Celebrities’ Colorado: Home of the Rocky Mountains, legal marijuana, and the Shagman with his immaculately clean cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs. If you’re a Coloradoan (or have ever watched a local station for more than 5 minutes) then this list of local “celebrities” should be pretty familiar to you. Let’s take a look at some of the most familiar, and infamous, faces. 1.) Jake Jabs (American Furniture Warehouse) Oh, Jake.. After all these years, you should know better than to leave for vacation! If it isn’t your granddaughter dramatically slashing prices, it’s your staff. P.S. Please bring back the tigers. 2.) Tom Shane (The Shane Company) I cherish the fact that I have a friend BEST friend in the diamond business. Thanks, Tom! 3.) Shagman, Audra, & Officer O’Dell (Rocky’s Auto) I grew up watching this trio’s antics… they aren’t an obnoxious nuisance; they’re family! I already know that I’m going to get a hard time for mentioning Kyle Clark (and not the dozens of other Denver anchors/reporters) but he deserves a spot on this list after his infamous “snow covered patio pics” rant made local and national headlines. 5.) Frank “The Strong Arm” Azar Frank Azar is to Denver as Saul Goodman is to Albuquerque (commercial wise, that is). Nobody beats a Dealin’ Doug deal, nobody (but in the off chance that somebody can, his grandson will give you a car)! Fun Fact: Men who wear knuckle rings are the most trustworthy people you’ll ever meet.
