(Jesse Tinsley) Each day during the two-week murder trial of her former son-in-law, Melanie Bourcier would position herself so that Clay Starbuck would see her scowl as corrections deputies led him past her in the courtroom. On Tuesday, Bourcier trembled, tears streaming down her face, as she said she believes a Spokane County jury delivered justice for the torture killing of her daughter, 42-year-old Chanin Starbuck of Deer Park. “Every day, and you can’t talk to her, it’s terrible,” Bourcier said of her daughter. “Today is a little bit of closure. But I don’t have my daughter back. There will always be an empty hole in my heart.” The jury deliberated for parts of two days before finding the 48-year-old former Alaska pipeline worker guilty of aggravated first-degree murder and sexually violating human remains. Starbuck’s face was pale and his jaw quivered as Superior Court Judge Greg Sypolt read the verdict, which mandates a prison sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Defense attorney Jill Gannon-Nagle briefly spoke to Starbuck, who replied: “I’m good, considering.” The jury left the courtroom after telling court staff they didn’t want to talk about their deliberations.

Clay earned about $10,000 a month, working on oil pipelines for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Alaska. Clay’s Dad worked there as a security officer from 1977 until his retirement in 2000. Chanin did not work. She was a full-time Mom to five children. Although Chanin held a Associate’s Degree in Art Therapy from Seminole State College, she wanted to work as a dental assistant. Chanin graduated from Dental Assistant’s School in Spokane, Washington. Unfortunately, someone strangled Chanin on December first or second, 2011. Dr. Sally Aiken, the Spokane County Medical Examiner, performed Chanin’s autopsy. Dr. Aiken could not set a time of death. She testified that her estimated time of death was not very accurate but it could have been Thursday, December 1st or early December 2nd. Suzanne Lee Elliott, Attorney for Clay Duane Starbuck The murderer(s) might have shot Chanin with a stun gun before breaking 11 ribs. Chanin was not shot with a stun gun, and wrists were not bound. On Your Worst Nightmare, ID addicts will see just how 42-year old Chanin Starbuck’s body was discovered in December, 2011, in a home that she shared with her children. According to the Spokesman‘s review, on a cold winter’s day, Chanin had failed to pick her child up from school, and her family was frantic with worry when they didn’t hear from her later that night. Chanin’s mother, who lived in another state, insisted that police enter the residence to see what happened to her missing daughter. When police entered the home in Deer Park, they found Chanin Starbuck dead in her bed. Investigators noted that she was wearing a flannel house coat that was unbuttoned and pulled open to expose her breasts, and bruising was apparent on her face, arm, and neck. But, it was worse. Chanin had been posed in her bed in a provocative position and an instrument had been inserted inside of her vagina. On top of her abdomen rested a massager. Her cell phone was also found by the bed, according to a police document that outlined the findings. To police, the crime looked sexual in nature, or it was staged to make her look like a loose woman. It also appeared that Chanin Starbuck definitely knew the person who killed her. The medical examiners concluded that the mother had been beaten and strangled before she died.
